Music is the point
Accuracy matters, but joy is the final measure. A MÆRE loudspeaker should make you search for another album simply to hear what it can reveal.
MÆRE creates substantial loudspeakers from natural materials, rigorous engineering and long periods of listening. Designed for the point where technical ability gives way to the simple pleasure of one more record.
MÆRE is an independent loudspeaker design studio and manufacturer. We build the kind of loudspeakers we wanted to own: technically serious, visually resolved and capable of making familiar music feel new again.
Our designs begin with a clear idea of how music should feel. Physics then sets the boundaries: driver behaviour, cabinet volume, diffraction, port alignment and crossover integration are modelled, measured and tested until the loudspeaker behaves as intended.
Listening is the final stage of engineering. Each design spends weeks playing music across different genres, levels, positions and rooms. It is considered complete only when it stops asking to be analysed and leaves us listening.
We believe performance should be allowed to determine form. Where a loudspeaker needs greater driver area, cabinet volume or component quality, those things are given space rather than engineered away for convenience.
Luxury, to us, is not a badge. It is careful thought, real materials, long-term serviceability and the confidence to leave the front of the loudspeaker completely unbranded.
Accuracy matters, but joy is the final measure. A MÆRE loudspeaker should make you search for another album simply to hear what it can reveal.
We do not make a cabinet smaller simply because a smaller object is easier to sell. The acoustic design comes first.
Materials and components are selected for a clear reason. Complexity, cost and decoration have no value unless they improve the finished loudspeaker.
A full-range loudspeaker for listeners unwilling to trade away scale, deep bass or dynamic freedom in the pursuit of a smaller box.
Cwen combines the physical authority of a classic large-format loudspeaker with modern low-distortion drivers, carefully controlled integration and a dedicated midrange enclosure.
It can be intimate, revealing the movement of a performer and the body of an acoustic instrument. When the recording grows, Cwen grows with it—remaining clean, composed and unexpectedly effortless at high listening levels.
The aim is not bass added for effect. It is the bass already in the recording, given the space and air required to exist.
Every dimension is considered. Cabinet alignment, port behaviour, baffle diffraction, driver integration and acoustic slopes are developed as one system rather than a collection of impressive parts.
Every design starts with what it must do: the room, listening habits, musical priorities and required sense of scale.
Drivers, enclosure, port, baffle and crossover are simulated and tested until the system behaves predictably.
Different music, volumes, rooms and trusted listeners are used to expose weaknesses rather than confirm first impressions.
Final component and voicing decisions are made over weeks. A design proves that it is finished.
Cwen’s enclosure is heavily braced, divided into dedicated acoustic spaces and lined with natural fibres. The arched internal structure is engineered for stiffness and control, but has an architectural character of its own.
The bass driver operates in a generous, carefully tuned enclosure with a large front slot port. This allows genuine low-frequency extension without relying on an exaggerated upper-bass response to create the impression of weight.
The midrange is isolated in its own sealed chamber, protected from the changing pressure produced by the bass system. Voices remain clean, stable and physically present even when the loudspeaker is working hard.
Crossover networks use substantial, low-loss components chosen for electrical performance and long-term stability. Internal cables are made by hand, tightly twisted and wrapped in cotton to preserve their geometry and create a secure, orderly installation.
Drivers, crossover assemblies and internal parts remain accessible. MÆRE loudspeakers are designed to be maintained rather than discarded.
Cwen is built and finished to order in selected real wood veneers. Grain, tone and final colour vary naturally, giving each pair an individual character without changing the resolved acoustic design.
Customers can select from approved veneer options, Osmo stain colours and matt, satin or gloss final finishes. We will guide combinations to preserve the proportions and visual character of the loudspeaker.
Because wood is a natural material, an exact match to a screen image or small sample cannot be guaranteed. The variation is part of the object, not a defect to be hidden.
Cwen is not held as anonymous stock. Each pair is specified, built, finished, tested and voiced for its owner.
Tell us about your room, system, music, listening habits and preferred finish. We will be direct about whether Cwen is the right loudspeaker for you.
We confirm the finish, quotation, estimated lead time and delivery arrangements before work begins. Current build time is generally around five to six weeks, subject to specialist component availability.
Delivery and installation are quoted separately. Home demonstrations may also be available by prior arrangement, depending on location.
MÆRE grew from years spent around hi-fi, live sound, studio equipment and music technology—and from the moment a genuinely high-end domestic system revealed what was possible at home.
When the time came to buy a serious pair of loudspeakers, the available choices felt increasingly compact and restrained. The desired loudspeaker—large-format, full-range, clean through the midrange and capable of real dynamic scale—did not seem to exist at the intended price.
Cwen was designed to fill that space. Its success gave MÆRE a reason to continue.
Today, MÆRE remains an independent Yorkshire design studio and manufacturer, with cabinet construction, finishing, crossover assembly, testing and final voicing carried out directly by the company.
Cwen is available on enquiry. Tell us what you listen to, how you use your system and what you want it to do. Demonstrations may be arranged in the listener’s own home by prior agreement.
